What Wagering Requirements Are
Wagering requirements determine how much you must stake before bonus winnings convert to withdrawable cash. In January 2026, the UKGC capped all wagering requirements at 10x the bonus amount — the most significant bonus reform in UK gambling history.
Before the cap: casinos routinely set 30x, 40x, or 50x wagering. A £50 bonus at 40x required £2,000 in total wagers. At 96% RTP: expected loss during wagering = £80 — more than the bonus itself. Most bonuses had negative expected value. You lost money by accepting them.
After the cap: the same £50 bonus at 10x requires £500 in total wagers. At 96% RTP: expected loss = £20. Bonus EV = +£30. The bonus has genuine positive expected value for the first time.
What Wagering Actually Applies To
This is where operators create confusion. "10x bonus" means you wager 10 times the bonus amount. But some operators calculate on the bonus only (Coral: 10x on £50 bonus = £500 wagering). Others calculate on deposit plus bonus (Casumo: 10x on £50 deposit + £50 bonus = £1,000 wagering).
The distinction doubles the effective requirement. A 10x bonus-only requirement is mathematically half as expensive as a 10x deposit-plus-bonus requirement. Read the terms on each offer — "10x" is not a single concept across operators. See UK casino bonus terms decoded for operator-by-operator breakdowns.
Excluded Games and Max-Bet Caps
Operators maintain lists of slots banned from bonus play. Blood Suckers (98%), Book of 99 (99%), Goblin's Cave (99.32%), and Mega Joker (99%) appear on most exclusion lists. Playing an excluded game with an active bonus risks voiding the bonus entirely.
Maximum bet during wagering. Most operators cap individual bet sizes during bonus play — typically £5. Casumo and Mr Green apply this cap. Exceeding it voids the bonus. This prevents players from making a single large bet to satisfy wagering requirements in one spin.
The Wager-Free Alternative
PlayOJO, LeoVegas, William Hill, and 888 now offer wager-free bonuses where winnings pay as immediate cash with no playthrough. These bypass the entire wagering system.
PlayOJO has no cap on wager-free winnings. William Hill caps at £30. LeoVegas imposes a 3-day expiry. Wager-free is structurally better than 10x wagered for most players, but the win caps and expiry limits matter — read the terms before assuming wager-free is automatically the best offer.
How to Evaluate Any Bonus
Use the RTPTrack Bonus EV Calculator. Input: bonus amount, wagering multiplier, deposit/bonus-only, game contribution, deployed RTP. Output: expected value in pounds. If positive, take the bonus. If negative, decline.
The 10x cap means most bonuses are now genuinely positive EV — but Casumo-style contribution penalties, win caps on wager-free, and excluded-game lists can still flip the maths. The calculator removes the guesswork. See also the 10x wagering cap complete guide for the full regulatory background.
