How hold and win actually works
Coin trigger. The bonus round typically activates when a minimum number of coin symbols (usually six) appear on the reels during base game play. Some variants use specific scatter triggers alongside coin accumulation; others activate based purely on coin count.
Lock and respin. Once triggered, the coins that appeared lock in place. The remaining reel positions respin. Any new coins that land during the respin also lock. The respins continue based on the specific slot's rules.
Respin reset condition. Most hold and win slots reset the respin counter when a new coin lands. Players typically get three respins at a time; if a new coin appears, the counter resets to three respins again.
Coin values. Each coin has a cash value attached, typically proportional to the base stake. Some slots include special "jackpot" coins with higher fixed values.
Bonus termination. The bonus ends when three consecutive respins produce no new coins OR when all positions on the grid fill with coins (the "screen full" outcome that typically triggers a jackpot payout).
