Cascading Slots: The Complete Guide to Tumbling Reels and Win Cascades
Cascading reels replaced spinning reels on many modern slots. Here's the category guide covering avalanches, tumbles, and everything in between.
Cascading reels is the slot mechanic where winning symbols are removed from the grid after a win resolves, with new symbols dropping or cascading into the vacated positions. If the new configuration produces another win, the cascade continues with another win evaluation. The mechanic creates the potential for extended win chains on a single initial spin and has become a defining feature of modern slot design. Originally popularised by NetEnt's Gonzo's Quest in 2011, cascading has been adopted across virtually every major provider and takes different specific forms under different studio implementations. This page lists cascading slots in the RTPTrack database and covers what distinguishes different cascading implementations.

How cascading actually works
Win evaluation. A standard win is identified on the reels through whatever winning mechanism the slot uses (paylines, ways, clusters).
Symbol removal. The symbols that participated in the winning combination are removed from the grid, leaving empty positions where they were.
Cascade entry. New symbols enter the grid. The specific entry method varies — some slots have symbols drop from above ("tumbling reels"), some have symbols collapse down from upper positions ("avalanche"), some have symbols appear instantly to fill vacant positions.
Re-evaluation. The new grid configuration is evaluated for wins. If a winning combination exists, the cascade continues with another win payment and another cascade. If no winning combination exists, the spin ends.
Chain length. Most cascading slots have no inherent maximum chain length. Realistic chain lengths are usually 3–8 consecutive cascades for winning events, with rare extended chains producing the category's most dramatic outcomes.
The cascading distinction from other mechanics
Respin features repeat the spin without removing or replacing symbols. A respin keeps some positions locked and respins others without the cascading removal-and-replacement dynamic.
Expanding reels add reel positions during bonus rounds without cascading wins. The reel grid grows but symbols do not remove and replace during win evaluation.
Hold and Win features lock coin symbols and respin remaining positions. The locked symbols do not cascade or remove; they accumulate value until the bonus ends.
Multiplier cascading is a subcategory where each cascade in a chain increases a multiplier applied to subsequent wins. This combination produces the category's largest win potential.
Cascading bonus round design
The power of cascading emerges most strongly during free spins rounds. Combining cascading with multiplier accumulation creates the potential for extended win chains with escalating payouts.
Gonzo's Quest and Gonzo's Quest Megaways use multipliers that start at 1x and increase per consecutive cascade during free spins, reaching 15x maximum in the original and unlimited in the Megaways version.
Pragmatic Play cluster slots (Sugar Rush, Starlight Princess) use different multiplier mechanics. Sugar Rush builds multipliers at fixed positions during free spins that persist through the round.
Push Gaming's cascading on Razor Shark integrates cascading with Mystery Stacks and multiplier wilds. Play'n GO cluster slots (Reactoonz, Gemix) use cascading within 7×7 grid structures with Quantum Features and Level Up mechanics.
Cascading RTP patterns
Cascading slots span the standard RTP range of 95–97%. BTG cascading titles run at 96.00–96.82% with fixed-RTP deployment. Pragmatic Play cascading runs at 96.40–96.70% with three-tier variation. Play'n GO cascading runs at 96.20–96.80% with multi-tier variation.
Push Gaming cascading runs at 96.40–96.70% with fixed-tier deployment. Hacksaw Gaming cascading runs at their standard 96.40–96.50% fixed-RTP positioning. NetEnt cascading runs at various levels with multi-tier variation.

Choosing cascading slots
- Cascading style: Avalanche-style (Gonzo's Quest), tumbling reels (Sweet Bonanza), cluster cascades (Reactoonz), and Megaways cascading all produce different gameplay feels.
- Multiplier mechanics: Unlimited multipliers (Megaways titles, Pragmatic modern slots) create the highest win ceilings. Fixed multiplier caps produce more moderate outcomes.
- RTP verification: Pragmatic Play, Play'n GO, and NetEnt cascading slots all have tier variation. Fixed-RTP from Push Gaming, BTG originals, and Hacksaw deploy consistently.
- Volatility profile: Most cascading slots are high volatility. Medium-volatility options like Gonzo's Quest exist but are less common.
