In November 2023, William Hill implemented a mass RTP reduction across multiple slot titles. The cuts were documented by players on the UK slot community forum backinamo.com with paytable screenshots. No mainstream gambling media reported it.
The documented cuts
Big Bass Bonanza dropped from 94.02% to 92.00%. John Hunter and the Book of Tut dropped from 96.50% to 92.07%. Mystery Reels Megaways was verified at 91.07% — over 5 percentage points below the default.
These are not marginal adjustments. A drop from 94.02% to 92.00% on Big Bass Bonanza increases the house edge from 5.98% to 8.00% — a 34% relative increase. On Mystery Reels Megaways, the 91.07% deployment gives William Hill a house edge of 8.93% — nearly triple the house edge at Paddy Power's 98.06% deployment of the same game.
Pre-positioning for the RGD
The timing is significant. November 2023 predates the April 2026 Remote Gaming Duty increase. William Hill (by then part of 888/Evoke after the 2022 acquisition) was pre-positioning margins before the tax shock. The cuts suggest the 888/Evoke group anticipated the need for wider margins and acted 18 months before the RGD increase took effect.
Silent reductions are legal
No operator is required to notify players when deployed RTP changes. No UKGC rule mandates disclosure of tier changes. A player who checked William Hill's Big Bass paytable in October 2023 would have seen 94.02%. The same player checking in December 2023 would have seen 92.00%. The game looked, sounded, and played identically. Only the in-game information panel revealed the change.
RTPTrack now classifies William Hill as a Tier 3 operator on our Best RTP Casinos ranking — verified aggressive reductions documented with evidence. For the broader pattern of operator-side RTP changes, see how casinos change RTP.
