RTPTrack's verified deployment data has uncovered something nobody expected: Sky Vegas — the UK's largest online casino — runs two versions of Starburst simultaneously with different RTP configurations.
The legacy HTML desktop client (starburst-html-desktop) deploys at 96.10% — the traditional Starburst experience most players know. The newer VEV client build (starburst-vev) deploys at 94.05% — a reduced variant that returns 2.05 percentage points less.
Both are live on Sky Vegas. Both are accessible. Players may be auto-routed to one or the other by device, browser, or geography. The player has no control over which build loads and may not notice the difference — the game looks identical.
The dual-build pattern is industry-wide
This is not a Sky Vegas-specific phenomenon. MrQ shows the same pattern: its /games/starburst page shows 96.10% while its /slots-and-games/starburst page shows 94.05%. The dual-build pattern appears to be an industry-wide artefact of the migration from legacy HTML5 clients to newer VEV (Virtual Experience Vendor) builds.
The cost is real. Over 10,000 spins at £1, the 94.05% build returns approximately £205 less than the 96.10% build. Same game. Same casino. Same brand. Different maths depending on which client loads.
What players should do
When Starburst loads at any UK casino, check the in-game information panel immediately. If it shows 94.05% instead of 96.09-96.10%, you are on the reduced build. Consider switching to a different game or checking if an alternative client is available. On desktop, try loading the game in a different browser or clearing cookies to see if you get the legacy client.
This finding demolishes the last remnant of the "Starburst is always safe" narrative. Not only is Starburst variable since April 2020 — at some casinos, two different versions coexist on the same domain, and the player cannot choose which one they receive.
